The Shepherd’s Path Volume Four

The Shepherd’s Path to Church Discipleship

How Jesus Kept His Disciples and How Your Church Can Do the Same

Your attendance number has not moved in two years, and neither has your list of names, except that roughly a third of them are different people. The front door works. The back door is wider and quieter, so it never shows up in a report. The ones leaving are rarely angry. They were simply never given anything that would have cost them something to walk away from.

The Problem

The leak nobody puts in a report

A flat attendance number can hide a complete turnover of people. These are the symptoms it hides.

Attendance Holds Steady While The Faces Change.

The number conceals the churn, so your leak stays invisible until the volunteer pool empties. This is where the book opens.

Chapter One: “The Revolving Door”

You Cannot Fill Volunteer Roles.

The word itself is doing damage. It names someone doing you a favour they may stop at any time, and people behave the way you name them.

Chapter Eight: “The Third Well: The V-Word”

People Attend Faithfully For A Year And Never Go Deeper.

You asked for depth before trust was built. The order is backwards, and the order is fixable.

Chapter Six: “The First Well: Trust Before Commitment”

Your Most Capable People Leave For A Church That Gave Them Something To Do.

Real responsibility with real stakes retains people. Comfort does not, and neither does being appreciated.

Chapter Ten: “Hand Them Monsters to Fight”

Every Meaningful Decision Still Routes Through You.

The usual constraint on discipleship is the leader. The book treats that as the normal case, not an accusation.

Chapter Thirteen: “The Bottleneck Wears Your Shoes”

You Have Run Four Programmes And Retention Has Not Moved.

Then the category is wrong, not the curriculum. A programme is something people attend, and attendance is not what keeps them.

Chapter Four: “No Needy Ones Among Them”

Part Two is the four wells: the mechanics of building people who stay. Full contents below.

What This Book Argues

  • What discipleship actually is: not a class, not a curriculum, and not a season of the church calendar. The book defines it before it prescribes anything.
  • What the Great Commission asks of a local church in practice, and why “make disciples” is a verb your programme cannot perform for you.
  • The revolving door: why people arrive, stay a season and quietly leave, and why exit interviews name the wrong cause almost every time.
  • What making disciples requires that programmes structurally cannot supply, and why adding another one usually widens the leak.
  • “They come to become you”: the uncomfortable claim that your congregation is discipled by what you are, not by what you teach.
  • Why the word “volunteer” should be killed, and what replaces it.
  • The four wells: trust before commitment, flipping the allocation, building the internship, and making them you before you send them.
  • The bottleneck that wears your shoes, and what to do when you are the constraint on spiritual formation in your own church.

Who This Is For

Pastors Watching People Quietly Leave
Attendance holds steady while the faces change. That is the leak this book is about, and your numbers will never show it to you.
Leaders Who Have Run Every Programme Going
If the curriculum keeps changing and retention does not, the category is wrong rather than the curriculum.
Anyone Who Cannot Recruit Volunteers
Chapter Eight argues the word itself is part of why, and gives you what to say instead.
Leadership Teams
The closing chapter is built to be worked through together over ninety days, so the load does not sit on you alone.

Not For: leaders who want a curriculum to buy and run. The argument is that discipleship is structural and personal rather than programmatic, which means there is nothing here to install.

The Plan

Three steps, in this order

The four wells are the book. Starting needs three moves, and none of them requires a budget or a new programme.

  1. Count The Churn, Not The Room

List everyone who was here two years ago. Mark who is still here. The gap is your real number, and most churches have never looked at it.

  2. Build trust before you ask for depth

Stop opening with commitment. The first well is trust, and asking in the wrong order is why faithful attenders never go deeper.

  3. Hand someone something real

Give one person genuine responsibility with genuine stakes. Not a rota slot: something that would actually break if they walked away.

Chapter Fourteen turns these into a ninety-day plan your leadership team works through together.

Before you start

Questions leaders ask first.

What Is Discipleship, In One Sentence?

Building a person into someone who can do what you do, by giving them your time, your trust and real responsibility, in that order.

That is a relationship with a direction, which is why no curriculum can supply it and why the book spends fourteen chapters on the mechanics instead of the definition.

What Does The Great Commission Actually Ask Of My Church?

“Make disciples” is the only imperative in the sentence. Going, baptising and teaching all hang off it grammatically, and churches routinely do the three and skip the one.

A church that gathers people without building them has done the going and not the commission. Chapters Two and Three work through what that means on a Tuesday.

When Is This Published?

What Is Wrong With The Word “Volunteer”?

It describes someone doing you a favour they could stop doing at any time without consequence, and people behave the way you name them.

Jesus did not recruit volunteers. Chapter Eight argues the replacement, and it changes what you ask people for.

Is This Another Discipleship Programme?

No, and the book argues fairly directly that programmes are part of why churches leak.

A programme is something people attend. What retains people is real responsibility handed over by someone who knows them, and no curriculum can supply that.

What If The Problem Is Me?

Then you have found Part Three, which assumes that is usually the case rather than treating it as an edge case.

“The bottleneck wears your shoes” is the chapter, and it is not written as an accusation. Being the constraint is what happens to capable people who never built a second one.
